Need a Mentor

Melissa Vazquez, Former Fellow

Being a LAW SCHOOL … Sí Se Puede Fellow has been a tremendous help during my journey to law school. The program itself has solidified my decision to pursue a law degree. LAW SCHOOL … Sí Se Puede recently offered a workshop on resumes and cover letters for law school, and being only a sophomore, it gave me an early insight as to what my focuses should be to stand out as a Law School applicant. Not only are the workshops informative, but also the mentoring that LAW SCHOOL … Sí Se Puede provides has helped me throughout my first years in college.

This past year, I had too much on my plate and I struggled with time management. Between multiple jobs, a research position, maintaining relationships, and remaining a committed member of every club and organization possible, it all became too much to handle and I was overwhelmed. As a first generation student, my family was unable to help or even understand my situation. Going to school 1,000 miles away from home, my family always feared that I would lack a support system that could help me through the rough patches of college. But LAW SCHOOL … Sí Se Puede provided just that. My LAW SCHOOL … Sí Se Puede mentors were able to listen and give me first hand experience. They became my family who was there whenever I encountered an obstacle. They provided a lot of advice and recommendations. My family was relieved to know that I had someone supporting me every step of the way.

After college, I plan on getting my masters and PhD in Public Health. The issues I see with access to health, and lack thereof, in developing countries are systematical. Thus I want to go to Law School and study international law so I can directly work with human rights issues and help fix these systematical barriers.
