Value of Community

“The only one that can keep you from your dreams is you.” My dad has told me this for as long as I can remember. My mom says I have to work three times harder - being Latina, a woman, and young. My family has taught me the value of hard work and education.

I learned in high school the importance of finding a community of people who share my same values, beliefs, and Latino culture. I found a community in Law School Yes We Can…Si Se Puede. The program has introduced me to people of difference backgrounds and stories, but who share the same values and goals - equality, education, perseverance, and strength through community. My three mentors have helped me stay motivated to reach my goal of being a criminal defense attorney, tell me about internship opportunities, and giving me helpful advice.

The workshops I have attended have helped me learn new study habits, how to ace an interview, and how to overcome the challenge of the LSAT. A workshop that really struck me was on the Myers-Briggs evaluation. I learned about the way I communicate and how I look at the world. It was interesting to see how the characteristics identified through the survey apply in my life, from meeting new people to what I am pursuing in a career. I learned how I value uniqueness and compassion, that I make decisions based on how it may affect what’s important to others and me, and that I welcome change and challenges.

I learned at CU Boulder in my multicultural leadership studies and LSYWC that it’s important to value different perspectives, make changes in your community, be a compassionate leader, and seek a strong community to help you grow stronger. I have found a trustworthy community in my three mentors, my fellow classmates, and talented attorneys and judges who are committed to keeping the LSYWC program thriving. It has been very special to be a part of an amazing program that not only supports my dreams and growth opportunities, but cares about me thriving in life. I can’t wait to continue my journey with the program, extend my community, and learn more!
